Adoption & Guardianship

Adoption is the process by which an adult assumes parental rights over a child. The rules on how to adopt, and who is eligible to adopt, will vary from state to state, and country to country.

Guardianship is the process by which an adult assumes legal rights (but not full parental rights) over a child. The adult will act as the guardian for the child, on a temporary or ongoing basis, as needed. Initiating this process is best handled by a family law attorney. By way of example, a grandparent can act as a guardian for a grandchild and enroll them in school and make medical decisions for them, while the child’s parents are unable to care for the child. Your family law attorney can help you petition the court for guardianship and protect your rights to care for those you love.

Your Court Buddy family law attorney can file your adoption petition and help you finalize your adoption.
