3 Important Things You Can Do Now To Protect Your Children's Future

In the midst of the school frenzy, it’s hard for parents to think about having a plan in place for their children in case the unexpected happens. Here are three important things you can do now to protect your children’s future.

Have A Guardian. If one or both parents are unable to take care of their children because they are incapacitated or physically or mentally disabled, a legal guardian steps in their shoes. A legal guardian can be appointed by the courts or by a will. A legal guardian can be anyone you feel comfortable taking care of your children if an emergency happens, such as your parents, siblings, or even a neighbor.

Have A Will. A will is a legal document that describes how your estate will be managed and distributed in the event of death. Both parents should have a will. Your will can be used to designate a guardian for your children and to ensure that your children are taken care of financially.

Have A Power Of Attorney. Although there are several types of power of attorney, a general power of attorney gives parents a person of their choosing the power to act on their behalf on legal and financial matters. Similar to a will or guardian, a power of attorney can spring into action to take care of your children if needed.

Doing one or all of these important things now can be the difference between your children being with loved ones or Child Protection Services in the event of an unexpected emergency or event. And the great news is that it only costs a few modest dollars.

Our children will outgrow their new clothes and will have new teachers next year. But if have an attorney create a guardianship, will, or power of attorney, or review or update existing ones, you can secure your children's future by having critical legal documents in place that last for as long as when the children become adults.
